Project Type : New Home
Location : Berwick, Melbourne
Status : Under Construction – Completion late 2017
Set on a large sloping site in outer-suburban Melbourne (Berwick) with significant bush views, this project is designed for a family at a unique life-stage. Whilst the children are now young adults who have flown the family nest, it was fundamental to the brief that this house could expand and shrink to operate in several different modes. First and foremost it will be the Forever home for the couple. Secondly the home had to be able to function as an entertaining space for large family gatherings. The house design was assessed to achieve exceptional energy efficiency. Careful zoning also means that in practice a substantial amount of the house can be easily closed off when not in use, further reducing heating and cooling costs. The design process and its resulting outcome has been a true confluence of site, client and architect. The muted exterior palette was selected so that the surrounding landscaping with its greens-grey hues would be the star attraction. The carefully rotated and placed volumes create well-proportioned internal courtyards and alfresco areas to suit the client’s lifestyle.
