Counterpoise (noun) To have an opposing and balancing effect
This design for a site in inner-city Melbourne (Brunswick East) engages with the tight site-context and heritage fabric / precinct by referencing the existing material palette found in the Victorian dwelling. By proposing a delicate upper-storey insertion that is embedded into a lower plinth made of recycled brick, the new upper addition sits lower within the neighbouring roof profiles. In order to achieve better open-space, amenity and light to all areas, a minimal on-ground footprint is proposed. The upper level addition gradually introduces a contemporary palette through the use of Custom Orb cladding and Polycarbonate wall sheeting.
