Michael is a registered Architect in Victoria with over 10 years industry experience. Prior to co founding Atelier Red + Black, Michael gained valuable experience with boutique small practices in Melbourne, which enabled him to work on projects from sketch design through to construction.

Michael is heavily engaged in the architecture community and writes the Red and Black Architect blog. Michael’s strengths include an affinity for problem solving design & construction matters along with a very down-to-earth manner. He enjoys the process of teasing out the initial concept into a refined scheme and has a keen eye for the relevance of materials.

He is a the deputy chair of the AIA National Committee for Gender Equity (NCGE), a mentor with the AIA’s Constructive Mentorship Program (CMP) and a guest design critic for the School of Architecture at Deakin University.

Michael firmly believes that Architecture is for everyone.


Sonia Sarangi

Sonia is a registered Architect in Victoria with over 12 years of industry experience, which spans across international and local architectural offices. Prior to co-founding Atelier Red + Black, Sonia gained experience in a diverse portfolio of projects in Singapore & Melbourne. She has worked on projects across a vast spectrum of Architectural scales – from Urban Design, Masterplanning, Commercial, Multi-Residential and Single Residential right through to Furniture Design.

Sonia’s strength include an ability to intuitively filter a client brief into an articulate design with a keen desire to infuse the concept into all scales of the design.  She enjoys the collaborative nature of building and is an articulate communicator in a team setting.

She is a sessional tutor for Architectural Practice with the Melbourne School of Design (MSD), a mentor with the AIA’s Constructive Mentorship Program (CMP) and a guest design critic for the School of Architecture at Deakin University.

Chelsea Doorne

Chelsea is a Graduate of architecture and has recently completed her Masters studies at the University of Melbourne. She has a keen interest in the conservation and adaptation of heritage buildings in a modern realm of architecture and hopes to see the appreciation of these structures span outside of the architecture world.  Outside of architecture she enjoys both interior and graphic design, as well as visual art.
